Keyword Research is the next part of the SEO process. There are two main branches of research: Competitor Research and Keyword Research. These branches are not mutually exclusive, they actually have a heavy impact on each other with each one helping the other get better results. First lets talk about keyword research. This helps us determine what Google search terms your site is getting hits for, what terms you could be getting hits with if you do a little work, and what you need to do to get hits for the terms you want.
The first step is to take a look at the terms your site is already getting hits for. This will tell us where the traffic you have already is coming from, and give us a general idea of what sorts of keywords we should be trying to look for in the future.
The next step is to enter a few choice seed keywords so we can find a broader range of related topics. These initial seed keywords should come from a mix of the keywords your site already gets hits for and keywords we think your site should be getting hits for. This will give us a range of related keywords as well as tell us how your site ranks on them, and how easy or difficult it might be for us to improve your ranking on these keywords.
This Keyword Research will help us:
- Determine competitors
- Determine our target audience
- Determine our market
- Determine the what content to focus on
From here we move into the next phase of our researching process; Competitor Research. We aren’t finished with Keyword Research though, far from it. As with everything involved in online marketing and SEO, Keyword Research is something you keep coming back to as part of the process. If you want to learn more about keyword research.
