Now that we have refined out content we need to begin to organize it. The important thing here is to figure out where our content will go on the site as well as how it will be presented.

Organizing by Page

Remember back in Mvp when we talked about the different page types? At this stage we want to begin looking at the content and picking out which content should go on which of those pages we outlined in our minimum viable product:

  • Home page: The homepage should be an introduction to the website, with a brief overview of what the site is about and what it offers. It should also include links to the most important pages of the site.
  • About us page: This page should provide information about the company or organization behind the website. It should include information about the company’s history, mission, values, and team members.
  • Contact page: The contact page should include the contact information of the company or organization, such as phone number, email, and physical address. It can also include a contact form for visitors to submit questions or feedback.
  • Services or products page: If the website offers services or products, this page should provide a detailed overview of what is offered, along with pricing information and any special features.
  • Blog page: If the website has a blog, this page should feature recent blog posts and allow visitors to browse by category or topic.
  • Gallery or portfolio page: If the website features visual content, such as photographs or artwork, this page should showcase the best examples.

Site Hierarchy

Site hierarchy refers to the organization and structure of a website’s content, which determines how information is categorized and presented to the user. A well-designed site hierarchy allows users to easily navigate a website and find the information they need. It also helps search engines understand the relationship between different pages on the site, which can improve the site’s search engine optimization (SEO) and visibility in search results. Site hierarchy typically consists of a homepage, main categories or sections, and subcategories or pages within those sections. The homepage serves as the starting point for users, providing an overview of the site’s content and navigation options. Main categories or sections are broad topics that encompass related subcategories or pages. The subcategories or pages are then organized hierarchically within their respective categories, creating a logical structure for the site’s content.

A clear and well-organized site hierarchy has several benefits for website owners and users. It helps website owners to ensure that their content is presented in a logical and easy-to-understand way, which can improve the user experience and encourage users to spend more time on the site. It also helps website owners to manage their content more efficiently by organizing it into meaningful categories and subcategories. For users, a clear site hierarchy makes it easier to find the information they are looking for, reducing frustration and improving their overall experience. Additionally, a well-structured site hierarchy can improve the site’s SEO by providing a clear and logical structure for search engines to crawl and index, which can result in higher search rankings and increased traffic to the site. Overall, a well-designed site hierarchy is essential for creating an effective and user-friendly website.

For now the important thing to look at with site Hierarchy is this, your content should be organized into headings and paragraphs. Ideally you will have one heading with 1-3 paragraphs of appropriate content underneath it.

You also can break it up and have smaller headings under bigger headings. For Example:

Moving On

Now that we have the bulk of our content written, refined, and organized we can move on to the next step in the web design process.
